THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR FOOD

 

A few handy things to know and understand about food that have helped guide us in the creation of Bricks Bars. We figured you might also find them useful if you're seeking a cleaner eating lifestyle.

 

 

GRASS FED

"You are what you eat" applies to animals too. Cows, bison and other ruminants have the planet's most highly evolved digestive organ, called the rumen. When the rumen digests grass, it produces a nutrient dense protein. Research shows that Grass Fed meat is lean, contains a high percentage of good fats (Omega 3s, CLA), beneficial antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.  Read more about Grass Fed animals and you will agree it is the way to go.

 

OMEGA 3s

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential nutrients for our health.  We all need Omega 3 fatty acids for numerous normal body functions.  Since our bodies can't produce Omega 3 fats, the only way we are able to get them is through our food.  This is where Grass Fed meat versus grain fed meat makes a significant nutritional impact.  Grass Fed meat contains up to five times as much Omega 3 fatty acids as grain fed meat does

 

CLA (IT'S GOOD!)

Conjugated Linoleic Acid, CLA for short, is a naturally occurring trans fatty acid made from Omega 6 essential fatty acids. There are plenty of options to supplement CLA in our diets but the most abundant source of natural CLA is found in the meat and dairy products of Grass Fed animals.  Grass Fed beef can contain three to five times as much CLA as grain fed beef. CLA also has many potential health benefits, which make it a welcome addition to our diets. 

 


 

CAFO (IT'S NOT GOOD!)

Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) are modeled after assembly line manufacturing facilities. The objective is to place as many animals, or birds into as small a space as possible, creating an environment for disease. Animals that are Grass Fed their entire lives are healthier, and therefore their meat is safer. Having knowledge of where our food comes from will help us make informed buying decisions.

 

ANTIBIOTIC FREE

Antibiotics are powerful medicines that fight bacterial infection. Used properly, antibiotics can save lives. However, today, since it is not required to keep records of antibiotic use in animals or the withdrawal period, whether they are used properly to treat a sick animal or improperly to promote growth, we have decided that all of our ingredients will never contain or be treated with antibiotics.

CLEAN EATING

The essence of clean eating is being mindful of our food's pathway from its origin to our plate. It means consuming organic, whole foods in their most natural state, avoiding highly processed foods containing any sort of additives.  It requires diligent ingredient label reading. Clean eating is not a diet, it is a life style approach to improving our health through the foods we choose to eat.

GLUTEN FREE

Gluten is a general name for the proteins found in wheat, and other cereal grains. For people with celiac disease, a gluten free diet is essential. Celiac disease is when your small intestine is hypersensitive to gluten, leading to difficulty in digesting food. The vast majority of people who have celiac don't even know it. For many other individuals, the advantages and benefits of a reduced gluten diet can translate to better health.  Bricks Bars are a convenient, clean food choice for maintaining a gluten free diet when on the move. 

 

SOY FREE

Avoiding soy can be difficult, since it is extremely prevalent in our food supply. For those with a soy allergy or for those that choose to eat a soy free diet, Bricks Bars are a convenient, soy free option. We have chosen not to include soy for those with allergies and because we have greatly reduced our eating of soy and soy products. PALEO Certified

The Paleo approach to eating is based on the belief that for optimal health, modern humans should return to eating real, whole, unprocessed foods that are more healthful than harmful to our bodies - Grass Fed meats, vegetables, fruits, seeds and  nuts. 

We eat 100% Paleo 80% of the time (what can we say? we have a cheat day!) All three Bricks Bars offer a delicious, convenient, Paleo Certified option for those who relate to our nutritional philosophy and active lifestyle.
